Happy couples adding spice to their wedding days
British brides and grooms-to-be are increasingly picking traditional Asian food and entertainment for their wedding receptions - regardless of their ethnic backgrounds, says Event Planning specialists Party Offers Ltd.
Catering and entertainment companies who are members of the corporate and private events services directory at Party Offers, have reported a marked surge in couples adding a "Bollywood" flavour to their special day.
Jon Stebbings, Sales & Marketing Director at Party Offers Ltd says: "We've had lots of feedback from our members over the last twelve months who have noticed an increase in couples from different ethnic backgrounds picking specialist Asian caterers and musicians."
With weddings now costing on average £17,000, couples are looking for areas in which they can economise without sacrificing quality.
Jon says: "The trend is definitely towards more towards a mix and match approach, couples want to spend their money on 'wow factors'. Aromatic, spicy food, or the sort of music you don't traditionally hear at English weddings - these appeal to couples who are telling our members they are looking for something a bit different."
Two of the most successful British films of recent years, Bend It Like Beckham and East Is East, featured colourful Hindi and Muslim wedding scenes and led to headlines celebrating Britain's melting pot culture.
Jon explains: "The Asian wedding planners in our directory have long been providing an essential service to members of the Indian, Pakistani and Bangladeshi communities. They need their help in organising traditional weddings - and they will continue to do so.
"Now people are combining elements from different cultures. It's not that unusual at a reception to find a bride in a classic white dress, snacking on a bhaji, while tapping her feet to flamenco music..."
Party Offers Ltd's catering members say the increase in vegetarianism is also driving customers to pick Indian cuisine, as it provides many tasty vegetarian options. The food also lends itself naturally to a buffet set up - this being the option many couples select when they strive to keep costs to a minimum.
If a buffet is chosen rather than a formal sit-down meal, many couples feel that they need to hire entertainers to play appropriate music while their guests eat. Traditional Dhol drummers are the obvious accompaniment to Indian buffets and especially popular as the music they play while being distinctive, isn't too obtrusive.
However, this isn't affecting the popularity of the now traditional wedding disco or band - "The Lady In Red" is here to stay.
